The primary control valves in dams and reservoirs are Howell Bunger valves. These valves are designed in such a way that the adverse effects of cavitation occur as a result of an increase in speed and a decrease in pressure outside the valve body. As with other control valves, these valves operate smoothly throughout their length and have nearly uniform cross-sections. Stainless steel is used for the sealing shafts and surfaces of these valves, while bronze is used for the moving surfaces of the sealing vertical sleeve.
